I remember reading in one of these groups of collectives who keep a database of things members own and are willing to lend to other members, such as tools, household items, baking pans, basically anything you occasionally need, but don't want to waste money and space buying it and storing it for long periods of time...
I was hoping that someone who is involved in such a community network could contact me as I would like to start something similar here and welcome tips on how to organize it and manage it.

Re: Tools/Household Items Collective Library?
Tue, August 26, 2008 - 3:21 AMFirst rule is No Freeloaders.
If people do not have something to share, tough. I've seen too many systems like this fail because all the freeloaders think they can just use everyone elses stuff.
Everyone has to be prepared to be a bastard and prepared to publically out people who do not return stuff promply and/or abuse it.
Make it personal recommendations/invitations only.
Good luck.

Re: Tools/Household Items Collective Library?
Sat, August 30, 2008 - 8:03 PMI've thought a lot about the whole owner's risk thing. That is usually what prevents people from lending their belongings. There is also the problem of some people not having the personal resources to pay to replace something that was damaged or broken, and in reality, even the most careful people occasionally break or damage things. I've been thinking about a membership fee - on a sliding scale, and that this money be used as an insurance fund for replacement or repair costs that may be needed from time to time. We would only include items for share that were of a value that the fund could afford to replace/repair if needed. If for some reason there was a significant amount of dipping into this fund, the members would have to decide what to do about the issue.
I am really trying to make sure the system is risk free and works smoothly for all involved. I know that relying on the good intensions of others is not always a realistic way to approach projects. It only takes one person with no regard for others to destroy people's faith in a project.
